Frequently Asked Questions
What is The Kinder Wardrobe?
We're a small, independent business based in Cheshire, selling high-quality preloved and pre-owned children's clothing. We believe great clothes shouldn't cost the earth — literally or financially. Every item we sell has been carefully selected for quality, so you can shop with confidence.
What does "preloved" mean?
Preloved means previously owned and worn. However, we also stock pre-owned new items — these are clothes that have never been worn but are no longer brand new, either with their original tags still attached or without. Whatever the item, we only stock pieces in excellent condition with plenty of life left in them.
Why do you stock ages 2–14 years rather than baby clothes?
It's a question we get asked, and the answer comes down to where we can genuinely add the most value.
Baby clothes tend to stay in good condition fairly easily — babies aren't yet independently mobile, they're not feeding themselves, and they grow so quickly that many outfits are barely worn before they're outgrown. That means baby preloved is relatively plentiful and straightforward to find in great condition from all sorts of sources.
Once children start moving independently, things change. They fall over, get muddy, spill food down themselves, and wear the same favourite pieces day after day. Clothes get a proper workout — which means far fewer items make it through in genuinely great condition. On general resale sites, this can mean taking a gamble: staining, damage, or heavy wear that isn't always honestly described.
This is exactly where The Kinder Wardrobe comes in. We focus on the 2–14 age range because it's where careful, honest curation really matters. Every item is individually checked, and if there's any washwear or imperfection — however minor — we'll note it clearly. You won't be caught out. What you see is what you get.
Why buy quality preloved rather than cheap new clothes?
It's a fair question — and one we feel strongly about.
Cheap clothing often comes at a hidden cost. Many budget brands rely on exploitative labour practices to keep prices low, which we believe is simply wrong. Fast fashion is also one of the biggest contributors to environmental damage — vast amounts of clothing end up in landfill every year, much of it after only a handful of wears.
And then there's the quality problem. Cheap clothes can look great on the hanger, but after a wash or two they shrink, fade, bobble, and quickly start to look tired. You end up spending more replacing them than you saved in the first place.
Quality brands — especially the organic and ethical labels we stock, like Frugi and Maxomorra — are made to a completely different standard. They're produced with better materials, fairer practices, and real longevity in mind. They wash beautifully, again and again, holding their shape, colour, and softness.
Because they last, they also hold their value. When your child grows out of them, you can often sell them on — to us, to another resale site, or pass them to friends and family — and recoup a good portion of what you paid. The clothes keep going, and so does their value.
Buying quality preloved means you get the best of all worlds: ethical, sustainable, great value — and clothes that still look wonderful, day after day.
What brands do you stock?
We specialise in quality brands known for their durability, ethical credentials, and ability to wash beautifully time after time. We don't stock fast fashion — ever.
Our core brands include organic and sustainably-minded favourites such as Frugi, Maxomorra, Polarn O. Pyret, and Kite, alongside trusted classics like Boden, Joules, Gap, John Lewis, and M&S.
Very occasionally we stock other brands — but only when items are in excellent condition and meet our quality standards. If you're looking for something specific, feel free to get in touch and we'll let you know if we have anything coming in.
How do you describe the condition of items?
We take condition seriously — our standards are higher than you'll find on most resale sites. You won't find tired, well-worn clothes here. Every item is individually checked before listing, and anything that doesn't meet our bar simply won't be sold.
We use the following grades:
New with tags: Pre-owned but completely unworn, original tags still attached
New without tags: Pre-owned but completely unworn, tags removed
Excellent: Worn very gently with no visible signs of wear — as close to new as preloved gets
Very Good: Carefully used with minimal signs of wear — looks great and ready to wear every day
Good: Shows the gentle signs of careful use — think a little softness from washing or very slight fading — but remains in thoroughly wearable, everyday condition.
Any specific details worth noting will always be mentioned in the product description, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Are items washed and ironed before dispatch?
All previously worn items are freshly laundered before dispatch, whenever possible using green energy from our own solar panels. New with tags and new without tags items are not washed, as they haven't been worn. Everything suitable is also ironed before dispatch, so your order arrives looking its best and ready to wear straight away.
How does sizing work?
We list items by the size on the label. Children's sizing can vary between brands, so we recommend checking the measurements in the product description where provided.
If an item comes up particularly generous or small for its stated size, we'll flag this in the product description so you can size up or down with confidence. If you're ever unsure, just get in touch and we'll help.
